Day 1 ended on a high, with the whole of the first zone completed, but today it was back to reality. From 5 hours of gameplay I only had two pages worth of quest progress in Plankerton. Plankerton seems to be a lot slower than Stonewood, and I think it will take a lot more than 10 hours to complete. The SSDs felt a bit more clutch too – there are more approaches to trap, block offs don’t work as well, and I just kept dying over and over again from the Blasters, pitchers, gunslingers and coal lobbers.
I enjoyed Rosie in Stonewood, but she is feeling very squishy in Plankerton. Similarly, Enforcer’s bear doesn’t feel as good as Jilly Teacup, whose Teddy really packs a punch. Jilly has phase shift at 2-star evolution as well, so she can really zip around the map. The day started well with a Super Hero llama containing Legendary Swordmaster Ken (his team perk, one-two punch, is great for farming if you don’t have Blast from the Past), an epic Power Base Knox, and a green Survivalist, amongst others. After completing SSD1 I had enough tickets to get it, so that immediately boosted my squads, plus the tickets I got from it gave me Fragment Flurry Jess from a Winter llama. Heroes sorted for the zone! Survivors were a different matter. After doing SSD2 I decided that maybe I should try and grind some event tickets, to get some survivors to level up my power level. I ran a Dungeons, and a couple of Crackshot’s missions. However, I then decided for the amount of extra time it was going to take, it wasn’t worth it. I returned back to my main questline, to do my first Repair the Shelter mission... and failed. I was the only one who built anything, and the lobbers just overwhelmed us. Felt a bit despondent, and ended the day on a low. The only saving grace was that I’d just got a blue wall launcher as a commander level reward, so at least I can start building trap tunnels in earnest on Day 3. So, 10 hours is over, and frankly I feel a bit exhausted! I had expected Stonewood to take 6, maybe 8 hours - 10 was longer than I imagined. I had forgotten how grindy the quests become by the end as well. The beginning was really fast and really fun.
I did not get a single weapon schematic that I liked, which was a bit disappointing. I’m still scavenging whatever I can and using the quest rewards I earned. The only top level trap schematic I got was a gas trap. I really need some launchers - fingers crossed for decent llamas on Day 2. However, I did get some decent heroes, and I was pretty happy with my loadouts by the end of the day. I think I will use these loadouts right through until the end of my race, and just invest in upgrading them, rather than pulling in a tonne of other heroes. The one key hero I’m missing right now is Survivalist - hopefully I’ll get him on Day 2. Other than that, my Constructor loadout is as good as it’s going to get without some event heroes like Ice King and Thora (maybe HBK would help, but he’s not essential). My Outlander loadout could be buffed in lots of ways. I really wanted to pull Frag Flurry from an event llama (I have a soft spot for her) but wasn’t lucky enough today. I could do with Trailblazer too for some extra Teddy damage. Again, I won’t get the key farming heroes because they’re event heroes, but I was surprised how much farming I got done even when AMC had a 45 energy cost. One thing that surprised me was how good the Stonewood public games were in general. In my experience of running Play with Others there, somebody is trying to trade box me and at least 2 are AFKing. In almost all my matches everybody participated. Of course, it is slow to start objectives compared to other zones - I guess because everybody is getting their quest items first. But after that they were working together to beat the husks. I didn't accept any carries or resources, except a couple of peg legs from a high level player who was in my Destroy the Encampments mission. I felt that was okay seeing as you don't keep them after the mission ends. And they were very helpful for doing the bonus encampments! I am looking forward to Plankerton. However, it’s 5 pages longer than Stonewood (13 compared to 8) and I think will take a lot longer time-wise. I haven’t decided yet whether I’m going to rush the SSDs or play out the quest line. Possibly I will have to play some quests to get better traps, and schematic XP to level up my traps, which will be essential for rushing, as well as doing a bit of farming. Time: 10 hours Quest progress: Finished entire Stonewood questline and SSDs 1-6. Power level: from 1 to 16 Commander level: from 0 to 26 |
